The Raspberry Pi Foundation launched the Raspberry Pi nano W this month. This is not the only tiny microcontroller development board to feature inbuilt networking. None of the networking standards supported (namely 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and Bluetooth Low Energy BLE) might be the first choice for an IoT device, depending on the desirable range and energy consumption requirements. However, the prominence of this brand in the maker and hobbyist communities means that for many, this device will be their first hands-on encounter with the Internet of Things.
